The Commercial Marine Network, in partnership with The Workboat Association launch Series 4 of Get Set for Workboat 2050.

Each online session will be split into shorter bitesize parts – giving delegates the opportunity to listen to speakers individually in a more time convenient way.   Delegates also have the opportunity to take part in 2 live sessions in this next series! 

Series 4 continues to dive into the latest developments in innovation and technology in the workboat sector to assist vessel operators and commercial marine businesses to decarbonise. The series will tackle the theme of what technology can be adopted now - helping to support businesses with decision-making to increase efficiency, reduce OPEX costs, and progress in taking steps to achieve net zero.

Delivered by leading experts from industry and academia, the series covered topics such as the impact of the new regulations and guidance, vessel integration and underwater radiated noise.

Future Fuels: Viability of low carbon fuels and green technologies for shipping 

The Net-Zero challenge needs a global effort across all sectors to achieve its objectives. Although energy-saving technologies can help us to reduce emissions the hot topic and single greatest impact can be made through the introduction of future zero/low carbon fuels. Unfortunately, there is no clear silver bullet or single replacement for fossil fuels, instead, there is a complex matrix of compromises from any replacement fuel solution.  
 
New energy solutions create a myriad of challenges and risks to ship designers that all need to be considered and mitigated. In this talk we outline a range of different future fuels being considered by the maritime industry, we hear from some of the latest cutting-edge academic research and hear how engine manufacturers are looking at near-term solutions as well as long-term developments. Please join us to explore the complex but promising world of future maritime fuels.

Vessel Integration 
 
In April 2018, IMO members agreed on a target to cut the shipping sector's overall CO2 output by 50 percent by 2050 compared to 2008. Whilst much focus to date has been on the individual technologies and fuel debates, in order to meet the IMO targets the solutions need to be integrated into the vessels. This vessel integration requires consideration of the challenges throughout the lifecycle of the vessels; from design and build right the way through to disposal.

For the maritime industry to reach its 2050 targets and continue to manufacture ships for the future it is imperative that all lifecycle phases are considered and that the embodied carbon is accounted for, allowing the correct equipment selection to be made. The talks in this session provide examples of recent ship integration challenges as well as outlining the tools and decision processes required to understand the impact of the different options.

However, the regulation also needs to be supported with suitable guidance to ensure it can be implemented effectively. This series of short talks explains the driving forces behind regulation and policy change, provide examples and trends of how new regulation is being implemented and provide a glimpse of the future regulatory landscape.
