Eight Level 3 apprentices from SeaRegs Training attended Seawork to meet key stakeholders in industry. The apprentices are completing the Level 3 Workboat Crew Member or Boatmaster apprenticeships, which are run over two years and end with examinations and assessments required by industry and the MCA.
The apprentices come from Cattewater Harbour Commissioners, Cory Group, City Cruises, Brightlingsea Harbour Commissioners and Silverline Cruises. In past years, the apprentices have met regulators and stakeholders from the MCA, RYA, MAIB, British Marine to get a greater understanding of the sector and to break down communication barriers.
The apprentices also had some time to walk around the show and gain insights into industry and new technology. In the evening, the Workboat Association kindly extended invitations to the apprentices to the prestigious Workboat association annual dinner.
Sean Marshall (Deputy Harbour Master for Cattewater Harbour Commissioners) said, “Cattewater Harbour Commissioners are both delighted and proud that our two apprentices are attending the Seawork Exhibition once again this year.
“This is Europe’s largest on-water commercial marine and workboat exhibition, and an excellent opportunity for our apprentices to engage with exhibitors and industry bodies thus allowing them to further develop all important interpersonal and networking skills”.
Over the two years of training, apprentices gain valuable MCA, SQA and RYA qualifications along with solid experience backed up by their employers. This leaves them ready to work whilst fulfilling the manning requirements as set by the Workboat Code or Class regulation.
Simon Jinks, Director of SeaRegs Training, stated, “Giving the opportunity to apprentices to come to the show is a great way to showcase the wide and varied sectors within the industry. The meetings we coordinate with stakeholders help break down barriers in communication between new people in the industry and those in positions of power.
“Our apprentices have been lucky enough to win “Apprentice of the Year” for the past two years, due to their hard work and dedication. They truly are a great bunch of learners.”
