Specialists in advanced composite armour systems, Air Sea Land Group (ASL GRP), has unveiled enhanced levels of protection from its ballistic protection outboard covers.
Now incorporating new IRR material and MOLLE system innovations – a first-of-its-kind for the marine and defence industries, the range of armour solutions are removable, flexible and custom made.
Launched last year and engineered to withstand projectile impact and fragmentation from small firearms and blast fragmentation, they provide a vital layer of defence and reinforce a vessels’ survivability in high-risk environments by ensuring the primary propulsion system remains intact and functional under fire and fragmentation.
A key advantage and industry-first, each ballistic outboard cover is custom made to suit client requirements, including the engine make, model and size, and can offer two levels of ballistic protection. The new covers can also be manufactured with optional Infra-Red Reflective (IRR) coating. This IRR coating reduces engine visibility when viewed through night-vision or IR-sensitive equipment.
The material make-up of the outboard covers naturally offers minimisation of the engine noise during operation. For users who require additional on-mission functionality, the covers can be supplied with MOLLE webbing, designed with heavy-duty nylon, allowing essential tools and accessories to be secured directly to the exterior of the outboard cover.
Jon Diffey, Managing Director of ASL GRP, comments, “Maintaining vessel mobility and functionality is vital in critical missions and patrols. In hostile maritime operations, where engines can be targeted by small arms fire or encounter blast fragmentation, protecting the powerhead of an outboard is an important survivability measure. Our outboard engine covers combine our decades of ballistic expertise and unique sector knowledge, giving operators another crucial element of protection, and the craft and crew the ability to keep moving, even when under threat.”
To support different vessel types and operational environments around the world, including border force, military and policing to commercial organisations and humanitarian missions, ASL GRP’s new ballistic outboard covers can be manufactured in a choice of colours including black, grey and camouflage finishes, matching with existing livery or needs.
With a strong order book into 2026, ASL GRP’s ballistic outboard engine covers combine advanced composite engineering with a practical, operational design to maintain essential vessel mobility, particularly for critical maritime operations.
