Seawork, with the support of Maritime UK (MUK) Solent, hosted a successful and well attended Careers and Training Day on the last day of Seawork.
Students from a mix of secondary schools and further education colleges from South Essex to the New Forest attended and were inspired about the exciting options available to them with two dedicated maritime careers events.
“Commercial Marine has Talent” - a live showcase of young people, just starting out in their careers in the marine industry, made upbeat presentations to the student audience and engaged in a lively Q & A session. The students then attended the Careers Fair with 17 exhibitors from a variety of sectors in the commercial marine industry. After which they had the chance to tour Seawork, speaking to exhibitors, visiting the pontoons, going onboard vessels and seeing the wide range and variety of jobs available in the commercial marine industry.
Lorna Wagner, Programme Manager at Maritime UK Solent, said, "Developing a talent base for the next generation is a key part of the long-term success of the maritime sector in our region. The Seawork careers fair is an ideal opportunity to bring together businesses and young people to showcase the wealth of marine career roles and help shape the skills needed for the sector to continue to thrive.”
Louise Bateman, Progression Mentor, St. Vincent College, commented, “Great day out – amazing, inspirational talks from students with successful apprenticeships. The Lego stand was a big hit!” She continued, “One student that attended is now seeking careers support to look at marine engineering apprenticeships.”
Simon Lofting, South Essex College, enthused, “After a long drive down to Southampton the Level 2 marine engineering students and 1 apprentice, all from South Essex College, were able to listen to 5 inspirational speakers covering jobs available in the Maritime industry.
"Following the careers event students were able to navigate the site, learning about the Marine industry and were able to view products, equipment, and tools. Students were able to go down to the pontoons and onto the vessels while speaking to the exhibitors, some of which directly support the marine engineering courses at South Essex College. A fantastic day had by all.”
