The next generation will take centre stage on the final day of Seawork this year. With the industry crying out for new talent, it’s the perfect opportunity to encourage young people to consider the commercial marine industry for future job and careers prospects.
On Thursday 12 June over 350 students from schools and colleges from around the South, and beyond will enjoy a dedicated Careers Fair, tour of the key elements of the exhibition and the unique Commercial Marine’s Got Talent, lively speaker sessions with “day in the life” videos from commercial marine professionals across the sector.
The Careers Fair, which has expanded this year, will feature both exhibitors and external organisations. Students can chat to a broad range of representatives from the industry, including Berthon, Svitzer, Wescom, Griffon Marine, LKQ Leisure and Marine, Careers at Sea, Royal Navy Careers Team, Serco and Maritime and Transport Careers Programme.
Speakers in “Commercial Marine’s Got Talent” come from diverse backgrounds, including a Tall Ship skipper, an apprentice and Cadet, Harbour Master and even a female Younger Brother of Trinity House. They will all come prepared to share their job and career experiences, with some fun “day in the life” videos spicing up the sessions.
A new Careers event has also been added to the Seawork calendar this year. On day two, Wednesday 11 June, Schools Careers leaders and representatives of the local education authorities will attend a Careers Insight event, giving them the opportunity to tour Seawork, meet exhibitors and find out more about the job and career opportunities in the commercial marine industry.
Thursday 12 June also sees the return of the BMEEA (British Marine Electrical and Electronics Association) celebrating the winners of the annual BMEEA Marine Electrical Apprentices Competition, a technical battle that takes place during Seawork’s Training and Careers Day. Open to Level 3 marine electrical apprentices, the competition takes place in real time with the task set on the day itself.
