Three prominent organisations that Seawork has close ties with have forces to launch an International Workboat Code of Practice Guide, designed to support safer, more consistent atandards across the global small commercial vessel sector.
Seawork exhibitors The Workboat Association (WA) and International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS) have joined the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) to present the new guidance, which they say providers operators and stakeholders 'with a clear, practical interpretation of good practices learned from the UK Workboat Code in an international context'.
"It brings together international regulatory expectations, operational good practice, and industry-aligned recommendations to help ensure vessels are constructed, operated and managed to a common benchmark regardless of sector, use or geographical region," the parties say.
The guide covers many areas including:
-
Safety and certification: Vessels must meet applicable construction, equipment and operational standards for their intended service.
-
Risk assessments: Required for relevant activities, including lifting, cargo handling and tender operations.
-
Crew and emergency readiness: Requirements cover lifesaving appliances, fire protection, medical care and safe working practices.
-
Specialist operations: Additional provisions apply to high-speed craft, lifting equipment, tenders and daughter craft.
-
Battery propulsion: Specific rules address battery management, charging, cooling, alarms and fire safety.
-
Ongoing compliance: Inspection, testing, maintenance and documented procedures are essential.
